Washington DC 2-Day Tour Itinerary

This detailed itinerary starts in the Navy Yard neighborhood of DC. This is a great starting place for your adventures when you stay in Washington DC. It is close to Downtown, the National Mall and all the monuments, museums and restaurants you will visit. Both the Nationals’ MLB stadium and MLS DC United soccer team stadium are located here, so the vibe is extra lively whenever there’s a game. Walk the waterfront, dine out in the area’s many restaurants, or hop on a WMATA Metro train or Metrobus to take you wherever you desire in DC.

 

 

What kind of neighborhood is Navy Yard?

Navy Yard is close to Downtown, the National Mall and all the monuments, museums and restaurants you will visit. There are dozens of new buildings here attracting young professionals and families alike, so there’s always something going on. Itinerary: Day 1

9-10am

For specialty coffees alongside breakfast sandwiches, parfaits and smoked salmon toast, check out the artisanal “all-day breakfast” at Slipstream. 10:30am-11:30 The Wharf

From breakfast, walk 20 minutes to The Wharf (SW Waterfront.) If you’re not up for the walk, take the $1 Circulator Bus from the north side of M St. SE @ Half St. SE [BLUE Circulator to L’enfant Plaza.]

 

The Wharf DC is a vibrant waterfront neighborhood in Washington DC, offering a dynamic mix of entertainment, dining, shopping, and residential spaces. Situated along the Potomac River, it boasts scenic views and lively promenades, including swings, piers and a spray park for kids in the summer. 11:30am-12:30pm- The Jefferson Memorial

From the Wharf, continue to walk along the waterfront  to the Jefferson Memorial.

 

The Jefferson Memorial is one of DC’s iconic landmarks. Situated on the Tidal Basin, the memorial offers breathtaking views of the surrounding cherry blossoms in the springtime. It will take approximately 20 minutes to walk from the Wharf (SW waterfront) to the Jefferson Memorial.

 

 

 

12:30-3pm Smithsonian National Museum of American History

From the Jefferson Memorial, take the $1 Circulator Bus from East Basin Drive SW . [RED Circulator towards Lincoln Memorial]  Have your camera ready as the bus goes past the MLK and Lincoln Memorials on its way back to the National Mall. 

Get off the Circulator bus at 12th and Jefferson (at the Washington Monument) for the Smithsonian Museum of American History.  The food exhibit, featuring Julia Child’s kitchen is a favorite exhibit. With kids be sure to check out the SparkLab, and Wegmans Wonderplace.

There are some food trucks on the mall offering decent, but overpriced food, or you can head to the Ronald Reagan building food court a few minute’s walk north.  

 

 

 

3-4pm

Enjoy a restful break on the great lawns of the National Mall as you take in the views of the US Capitol on one side and the Washington Monument on the other.  If you have kids they can run around the grass or step through the  sculpture garden, a 10 minute walk in the direction of the Capitol building.  

Walk to Sculpture Garden along Constitution (food trucks)

4-6pm

Check out some great Happy Hour options nearby to have an early dinner before your show at The Kennedy Center. 

Walk north on 7th St. NW:

6:00 Performance Starts

Uber or Metro to the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage for a free nightly performance- you must reserve tickets here– PERFORMANCE TIME-  Wednesday through Saturday, 6:00pm

Walk 10 minutes to Federal Triangle Metro Station at 12th and Pennsylvania Ave, then take the Silver, Blue or Orange Line to Foggy Bottom/GWU.  Then walk 10 minutes to the Kennedy Center.
